On 24 September 2025, something remarkable happened in Walvis Bay, Namibia.
During the International Week of the Deaf, and on the International Day of Sign Languages, the Namibian Sign Language Mobile App (NAMSLAP) was officially launched.
The event, officiated by the Vice President of the Republic of Namibia and covered by NBC Digital News, marked a powerful moment for communication, accessibility, and inclusion across Namibia.
Technology built for inclusion
NAMSLAP makes learning Namibian Sign Language accessible to anyone, anywhere.
The app includes:
- Learning through categories and phrases
- A searchable library of words and signs
- Workplace vocabulary
- A “Word of the Day” feature for daily learning
And it’s completely free to use – a digital learning space built for access, awareness, and connection.

The project was made possible through the Namibia National Association of the Deaf (NNAD), the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), and the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF).

NAMSLAP follows the success of the South African Sign Language App (DEAFinition), also built by Yobi Code, which has already connected tens of thousands of South Africans to free sign language learning.
The Namibian app builds on that foundation, with the same user-friendly approach and future plans for offline use and real-time translation, expanding access even further.
